GUELPH – A Guelph man is now charged with second-degree murder after an 80-year-old woman was severely beaten late last month.
Approximately 9:40 a.m. August 31, emergency services were called to the area of Wyndham Street North and Macdonell Street where they found the woman unconscious on the sidewalk.
The victim was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived but was later identified and arrested Sunday night.
A 34-year-old Guelph man was initially charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.
The woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital three days after the attack.
On Wednesday the accused, who remains in custody, was arrested on an upgraded charge of second-degree murder.
It is believed the two had met previously but were not close acquaintances. There is no ongoing threat to public safety.
The incident remains under investigation
