CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning residents after a recent investment scam that involved a local resident being scammed out of $600, and the Wellington County OPP wants the public to be aware.
On September 9, 2025, a resident of Centre Wellington was contacted by the scammer via an unsolicited unknown phone call, stating that the victim had an investment from three years ago that was worth nearly 3 million dollars, and that the scammer wanted to help the victim get their money back.
The scammer advised the victim needed to hand over their account information, all banking information, a phone number associated to their account, alongside with a face scan. To which the victim handed over all the provided information.
A short time later, the victim noticed $600 was withdrawn from their account.
The Wellington County OPP encourages the public to stay alert and educated to reduce the risk of being a victim of fraud. If you receive an unsolicited phone call or message, asking for personal information (name, birthday, address, phone number, bank information, SIN number) or payment via gift cards for a product, do not provide the information and hang-up the phone and block the phone number.
