CENTRE WELLINGTON – Centre Wellington Council has acknowledged Ontario’s housing crisis and endorsed a defined role for the Township in addressing it.
During a recent meeting, council approved to acknowledge the housing supply and affordability crisis in Ontario and support the Township having a defined role in addressing this crisis going forward.
According to a township report, Centre Wellington currently has a rental vacancy rate of 1.9 per cent.
The report says there are 605 households in core housing need in Centre Wellington, including approximately 380 renters and 220 owners.
Brett Salmon, Managing Director of Planning and Development, says we still have a housing affordability problem.
Councillor Jennifer Adams raised concerns about the staff resources a new committee might require, while CAO Dan Wilson noted all strategies are still under review, with staff expected to report back on feasibility.
Approved at Monday’s meeting, council will incorporate four strategies into the 2026 Budget and Business Plan, including:
- Prepare a Township Housing Action Plan
- Investigate the creation of a Township Housing Advisory Committee
- Investigate potential applications to Wellington County for housing funding
- Consider staffing implications of a Township housing mandate going forward
Salmon says this is meant to be a framework for the township to jump off and get more involved in housing.
