Centre Wellington is moving forward with plans to introduce a Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) on overnight stays such as hotel rooms and short-term rentals.
Council has approved the structure for a new Municipal Service Corporation that would oversee tourism and economic development — a requirement under provincial MAT regulations, which state that at least half of the tax revenue must go to an eligible tourism entity.
Consulting firm Linton Consulting Services completed the first phase of the project and will now assist with community engagement and legal preparation. Public input will be gathered through meetings with residents, businesses, and accommodation providers, as well as at the Township’s Project Open House on October 21.
To support the next phase, Council has approved an additional $24,800 from reserves. Staff will return with engagement results and draft bylaws before the corporation is officially established.
