ELORA – Monday night’s Township of Centre Wellington’s Mayor’s Town Hall saw local community members gather at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre to share concerns about the growing impact of tourism, particularly in Elora.
Some residents raised issues about long-term rentals being replaced by short-term accommodations, making it harder to find affordable housing.
Others spoke about traffic, garbage, and the lack of available parking spaces in Downtown Elora.
Mayor Shawn Watters acknowledged these challenges, pointing to the need for careful planning and balance between welcoming visitors and supporting residents. Watters said the township has seen an estimated 750,000 tourist visits each year.
Township staff said measures are being considered, including paid parking (free for locals), and a new accommodation tax to help fund tourism-related services without relying on local tax dollars.
Chief Administrative Officer Dan Wilson confirmed council has a workshop planned to discuss a short-term rental bylaw, set for next month.
While many expressed frustration, some residents felt tourism brings life to the area — they just want to see better management moving forward.
