FERGUS – Habitat for Humanity Guelph-Wellington has officially opened Garafraxa Village, a new 32-unit townhouse development in Fergus that’s been nearly three years in the making.
Twelve families received their keys during a ceremony on Saturday, with four already moved in.
CEO Steve Howard says the original plan was to designate 22 units for Habitat families and sell the remaining 10 on the market to support fundraising. But overwhelming community support — including donated materials, labour, and funding — means all 32 units are now expected to go to Habitat families.
Residents like Caterina and Swetalana say the move offers stability and hope for their futures. Crew leader Kevin Lake emphasizes that Habitat homes are not handouts, and many applicants are working families who can’t break into the housing market.
Applications for the remaining units are still open.
The Habitat ReStore continues to cover most of the organization’s operating costs.
