NEWS RELEASE TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON
CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Township of Centre Wellington is moving forward with the implementation of a Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) – a modest fee applied to overnight stays in hotels, motels, and short-term accommodations across the Township. Paid by visitors, the MAT provides a meaningful opportunity for tourists to contribute to the local amenities and services they enjoy during their stay.
This initiative will have no direct cost to residents or accommodation owners/operators, while helping reduce reliance on property taxes by generating new, dedicated revenue. Funds collected through the MAT will be reinvested directly into tourism initiatives and Township infrastructure improvements that benefit both residents and visitors.
In September, Council approved the next phase of MAT implementation, including the creation of a new Municipal Services Corporation (MSC) – a 100% Township-owned, arms-length entity that will administer the MAT program. Beyond managing the tax, the MSC will focus on driving investment, job creation, and maximizing the long-term value of tourism in the community.
“The Municipal Accommodation Tax is an opportunity to strengthen Centre Wellington’s visitor economy in a way that benefits all of us,” said Mayor Shawn Watters. “By reinvesting MAT revenues locally, we’re building a stronger, more resilient community — and we want to make sure your voice helps shape how we get there.”
The Township is currently in the community engagement phase of the project and is inviting all residents and stakeholders to share their feedback through the following ways:
