NEWS RELEASE GUELPH POLICE SERVICE
GUELPH – A Guelph man faces several charges and was immediately taken off the road after he was caught driving more than four times the speed limit.
Just before 1 a.m. Saturday, a Guelph Police Service officer was conducting speed enforcement on Stone Road East near Victoria Road South when he clocked an Audi travelling 161 km/h in a posted 40 km/h zone.
The vehicle was pulled over and the officer detected a strong odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath. He provided a roadside breath sample which registered an alert, indicating a blood-alcohol concentration of 50 to 79 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams.
A search of the car revealed more than 30 empty beer cans in the rear seat as well as a contaminated cannabis pipe and a vapourizer beside the driver’s seat.
A 21-year-old Guelph man is charged with stunt driving, speeding, failing to surrender a vehicle permit and driving a vehicle with cannabis available. His licence was suspended for 30 days and his vehicle was seized for 14 days. He was also served with a 72-hour licence suspension due to the alcohol readings.
A stunt driving conviction will attract a minimum licence suspension of one year, a minimum fine of $2,000 and six demerit points.
