CENTRE WELLINGTON – As of January 1st, changes to the Ontario Fire Code will require increased carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in residential occupancies and care occupancies.
Since 2014, CO alarms have been required by Ontario law outside all sleeping areas in homes with fuel-fired appliances, fireplaces or garages.
However, Christopher Paluch, Fire Prevention Officer with Centre Wellington Fire Rescue says starting January 1st, the province is expanding these requirements in the new year to further protect residents from CO exposure.
Paluch says the expanded CO alarm requirements in Ontario will also apply to multi-unit residential buildings, such as apartment buildings, condominiums, hotels, motels, and retirement homes.
Paluch is encouraging residents to check their alarms now and installing any additional units needed to meet the upcoming standard.
He says ensuring proper alarm placement before the new rules take effect will not only help residents stay compliant but could also save lives.
