WELLINGTON COUNTY -Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington has a new campaign out highlighting the real cost of retail crime
The Cost of Retail Theft is an awareness campaign, including a video developed in partnership with Guelph Police. The video, along with social media posts, highlights the costs to businesses, customers, staff, and the community as a whole.
CSGW Program Coordinator Sarah Bowers-Peter says, as we move into a peak retail season, it just makes sense to talk about a crime that is largely misunderstood.
She says Most people think the cost of retail crime is absorbed by the businesses that are victimized, but that’s simply not possible.
Bowers-Peter states that products stolen from businesses through smash and grabs or other organized thefts are often sold online. The quality and integrity of these products can be compromised, putting buyers and their families at risk.
She says Businesses are faced with increased costs due to “shrinkage,” the anticipated losses resulting from damaged or stolen goods, and repairs to their businesses when the doors, windows, and other property are damaged.
CSGW is also offering a presentation, The CO$T of Retail Theft, which helps explain these costs and the risks associated with purchasing stolen products.
