Wellington County is considering several waste fee changes for 2026, including a proposed increase to the waste tipping fee and a new surcharge for mattress disposal.
A report to the Solid Waste Services Committee recommends raising the tipping fee from $145 to $155 per tonne, bringing it in line with the average fee among 16 comparable municipalities. Staff say the adjustment helps preserve landfill capacity and avoids larger increases in the future.
The report also proposes a new $15 mattress surcharge, which would offset most of the County’s $100,000 annual cost for mattress diversion—a program that has extended the life of the Riverstown landfill by an estimated four years.
No changes are recommended for User Pay garbage bag fees. Inflation hasn’t yet reached the threshold needed to trigger a 25-cent increase.
If approved by County Council, the new fees would take effect January 1, 2026.
