NEWS RELEASE WELLINGTON COUNTY OPP
(WELLINGTON COUNTY, ON) – With the early arrival of fresh snow, the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reminds snowmobilers to respect trail status and to avoid using trails that are closed.
Snowmobile trails are still being staked, brush is being cleared, and debris is actively being removed. Trails are not ready yet within Wellington County, but the season is on its way! Please be patient.
Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club (OFSC) trails are carefully managed to ensure rider safety and protect landowner agreements. When trails are marked CLOSED, it means conditions are unsafe or access is restricted. Riding on closed trails can:
- Put you at risk – Hazards like thin ice, hidden obstacles, or unfinished grooming can cause serious injury.
- Damage landowner relationships – Unauthorized use can lead to permanent loss of trail access for everyone.
- Result in fines or charges – Trespassing on closed trails is illegal and enforceable.
Always check the OFSC Interactive Trail Guide (ITG) before you ride. Green means open and safe, red means closed – stay off.
You may see snowmobile club members in safety vests out on the trails, helping to prepare for the season ahead.
Wellington OPP is working collaboratively with all snowmobile clubs within the county to ensure safety and compliance. Riders must have valid insurance, permits and trail passes to operate on public trails.
Your cooperation keeps trails safe, preserves access, and protects the future of snowmobiling in Ontario.
Ride Smart. Ride Safe. Respect the Red. And NEVER ride impaired.
If you have an urgent complaint or if you suspect someone is operating a snowmobile while impaired by drugs or alcohol, please call 911 immediately.
