ELORA – A report headed to Centre Wellington Council on Monday includes a recommendation to issue a Request for Proposal for a Downtown Elora Traffic Study.
According to the report, Elora has experienced significant growth in recent years, causing noticeable traffic congestion in the downtown core at certain times of day.
“With the Township’s population expected to grow to 58,100 by 2051, new development plans in progress, and tourism-related visits to the community, traffic and pedestrian volumes in downtown Elora are anticipated to continue to increase,” the report says.
To accommodate additional vehicles and pedestrians, Centre Wellington staff say new strategies are needed to enhance traffic flow and provide all road users with safe and efficient travel.
In fall 2025, Wellington County completed a study at the Metcalfe Street and West and East Mill Street intersection.
It found that a pedestrian-only scramble was not warranted, but recommended No Right Turn on Red restrictions and leading pedestrian intervals.
While those changes are expected to improve movement and enhance pedestrian safety at the intersection, staff say a broader study is needed to better understand traffic flow throughout downtown Elora.
The project budget is $100,000, shared equally between the Township and the County.
Council will consider the report at Monday’s 6 pm meeting.
