GUELPH – The SIU has concluded its investigation into a man’s broken leg in a Guelph arrest.
In a news release, the Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, found no reasonable grounds to believe a Guelph Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the fractured left leg suffered by a 35-year-old man.
On October 19th of last year, officers went to a residence in the area of Arkell Road and Gordon Street to arrest the man for being in the basement of the house in violation of a release order.
The man was handcuffed without incident and escorted outside. While out front of the home, the man made a sudden move to his left to break free, and he was forced to the ground by officers.
Whether the man broke his leg from the takedown or the pressure placed by the officers on his body to keep him pinned to the ground momentarily before they stood him back up, Martino says the evidence does not establish that the injury was the result of unlawful conduct on the part of any officer.
