WELLINGTON COUNTY – Another stretch of bitterly cold winter weather is creating challenges for local farmers, particularly in the dairy sector.
Janet Harrop, a local dairy farmer and member of the Wellington Federation of Agriculture, says heavy snow and blocked rural roads can occasionally disrupt milk pickups. In rare cases, delivery trucks are unable to reach farms, forcing fresh milk to be thrown out.
Harrop says a significant amount of time is spent clearing laneways after snowfalls, sometimes taking hours just to ensure trucks can safely get in and out. Prolonged cold temperatures also increase operating costs, with higher fuel and energy use needed to keep equipment running and animals comfortable.
Despite the challenges, Harrop notes winter weather does have its advantages. Consistent cold and snow create a natural thermal layer that helps protect crops and soil from deeper freezes.
The forecast shows below-seasonal temperatures continuing through the week, with milder conditions expected by next weekend.
