NEWS RELEASE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY GUELPH WELLINGTON
WELLINGTON COUNTY – Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington is marking a major milestone this weekend, celebrating 25 years of building affordable housing.
Founded in 2001, Habitat GW is a registered charity dedicated to creating affordable homeownership opportunities for local families. What began as a small, volunteer-driven effort building single-family homes has grown into a multi-project organization responding
to increasing housing needs across Guelph and Wellington County.
Over the past 25 years, Habitat GW has supported dozens of families in achieving stable housing. Early builds across communities such as Rockwood, Elora, Fergus, Mount Forest, Arthur, and Guelph laid the foundation for growth. More recently, larger developments have expanded that impact, including Cityview Village, which welcomed 28 families in Guelph, and Garafraxa Village in Fergus, a 32-unit stacked townhome community now welcoming its first homeowners. Future efforts include Speedvale Commons in Guelph, a planned 30-unit community currently in development.
These efforts have been made possible through the support of thousands of volunteers, donors, tradespeople, and long-standing partners such as Tacoma Engineers. The Guelph and Fergus ReStores also play a critical role, serving as hubs for sustainability and community connection while funding local builds and operations.
The 25th anniversary celebration is open to the public and will feature a rare 25% storewide sale at both ReStore locations. This one-day sale is being oƯered in recognition of the community that has supported Habitat GW over the past 25 years.
Visitors can explore interactive displays highlighting housing partnerships, kitchen salvages and renovations, and the environmental impact of the ReStore. The event will also include light refreshments, cake, a live radio broadcast, prize giveaways, and additional in-store promotions.
“At a time when aƯordable housing remains a significant challenge locally, this milestone is both a celebration of progress and a reminder of the work still ahead,” said Steve Howard, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington, who will be retiring next week.
