FERGUS – Downtown Fergus will be filled with the sound of pipes and drums on Sunday, April 12, as local pipe bands celebrate National Tartan Day.
Pipe Major Mark Cripps of the Fergus Pipe Band says that from 1:00 to 4:30 pm in the afternoon, both the Fergus Pipe Band and the Grand Celtic Pipe Band will perform a number of pop-up sets along St. Andrew Street.
That joint performance with both pipe bands will take place at around 2:45 pm in front of the Fergus Grand Theatre, Cripps adds it’s something special to have two pipe bands in the community.
In addition to performing on the street, the performances at the local establishments include the Fergus Legion (12:30 & 4:00), the Breadalbane Inn (1:15 & 4:30), the Outpost (2:00 & 3:15), the Brewhouse (1:45 & 3:15), and the Goofie Newfie (1:00 & 4:15).
The Tartan Day celebration is usually held on the first Sunday in April, but was moved this year since that date fell on Easter Sunday.
National Tartan Day traces its origins back to Canada. In 1986, the Federation of Scottish Clans in Nova Scotia proposed creating a day dedicated to celebrating and promoting Scottish heritage through the public display of tartan and cultural traditions.
