PUSLINCH – With the weather warming up, Wellington County OPP are encouraging the public to be vigilant and report suspected copper wire theft in the community.
On Tuesday evening at around 6:15 pm, OPP attended Lake Road in Puslinch Township after receiving a report of a copper telecommunication wire theft.
Police say an unknown male suspect was observed on an e-bike collecting approximately 25 metres of wire from the shoulder of the roadway. The suspect left prior to police arrival.
“Theft and damage to telecommunication lines are more than just property crimes, they can have serious public safety consequences. These lines support critical services like 911 emergency access, medical alert systems, and internet and phone connectivity. When they’re compromised, entire communities can lose access to emergency help and essential communication, putting lives at risk and disrupting daily life,” police said in a news release.
Telecommunication wires are often targeted for their copper content, which is commonly resold at scrap yards, making them a target for theft.
Wellington County OPP urges the public to report any suspicious activity near telecom infrastructure to help protect these vital services.
Any person with information regarding this incident should contact the Wellington County OPP or Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington.
