CENTRE WELLINGTON – Centre Wellington councillors and members of local legions are supporting the idea of installing veterans-themed crosswalks in Fergus and Elora, despite staff recommendations against the idea.
The township’s Inclusive Community Policy, which was before council Monday night, raised concerns about durability, cost, maintenance, accessibility, and safety of painted crosswalks, suggesting alternative ways to honour veterans such as illuminated public spaces and digital displays.
Elora Legion president Don Cubbage says Remembrance Day should not be limited to one day a year.
Fergus Legion president Randy Graham echoed Cubbage’s remarks.
Despite staff’s recommendation, councillors unanimously supported further exploring the feasibility of the veterans-themed crosswalks.
Cubbage said the Elora Legion would contribute financially up to $500 annual toward ongoing maintenance.
Councillors emphasized that while they respect staff concerns, they do not want veterans to feel overlooked.
