ONTARIO – The Victoria Day long weekend is here, and it also coincides with Canada Road Safety Week.
As traffic volumes increase and more tourists hit the roads, police are stepping up enforcement efforts to help keep drivers safe throughout the busy holiday weekend.
Sergeant Ed Sanchuk with West Region OPP says the May Victoria Day long weekend often marks the unofficial start of summer, and is reminding everyone to take that extra moment and make the safe choice.
OPP say speeding, alcohol/drug impairment, driver inattention, and lack of occupant restraint were linked to a significant number of last year’s 344 fatalities on OPP patrolled roads.
Sanchuk with West Region OPP says far too often they see tragedy that could have been prevented.
Canada Road Safety Week runs now until May 18th.
Take that extra moment and make the safe choice. It matters more than YOU realize! #OPP wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable weekend with family and friends. Happy Victoria Day #LongWeekend, please drive safely! #WROPP ^es pic.twitter.com/4qBWIMyG0k
