WELLINGTON COUNTY – Wellington County may temporarily stop accepting used tires at its waste facilities as thousands of tires continue piling up across Ontario.
County officials say changes to the province’s tire recycling system have created a backlog, with recycling organizations meeting their reduced collection targets and slowing or stopping tire pickups.
As a result, Wellington’s waste sites have exceeded normal storage capacity, with some locations storing up to four times their intended volume.
Staff report calls to registered tire haulers are going unanswered, leaving the County with limited options for storing additional tires.
A report going to county council recommends temporarily suspending tire drop-offs until new provincial regulations take effect and the backlog can be cleared.
If council approves the recommendation later this month, the county waste facilities would stop accepting tires starting July 1st.
