The Ontario Provincial Police is launching a new traffic safety campaign aimed at reducing the number of serious and fatal collisions at intersections across western Ontario.
In a press release, West Region OPP announced the launch of the “Stop. Look. Live.” campaign, which runs from June 15th to June 21st. The initiative comes amid ongoing concerns about intersection-related crashes, particularly those involving drivers who fail to stop, yield, or pay attention behind the wheel.
According to police, 13 people lost their lives in intersection-related and failure-to-yield collisions in both 2024 and 2025. Since May of this year alone, West Region OPP officers have investigated three separate fatal intersection crashes, each claiming five lives.
Wellington County OPP say the devastating collision in Mapleton Township on Friday that claimed the lives of five children was not connected to the creation or timing of the campaign, but it does highlight the importance of safe driving behaviours at intersections.
Staff Sergeant Julie McLeod of the West Region Traffic and Marine Unit says every intersection presents a critical decision point for drivers, noting that taking an extra moment to stop and look can save lives.
Throughout the campaign, officers will focus on enforcement and public education, targeting behaviours such as failing to stop at stop signs, failing to yield the right of way, and inattentive driving.
Police are reminding motorists to come to a complete stop, look in all directions before proceeding, never assume other drivers will stop or yield, and remain aware of pedestrians and cyclists.
The OPP says choosing to slow down and take that extra moment is an act of care that can help keep everyone on the road safe.
