CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Township of Centre Wellington is seeking provincial funding through Ontario’s Development Charge Reduction Program in an effort to support major infrastructure projects tied to future housing growth.
Council has directed staff to apply to the one-time competitive program, which offers municipalities up to 90 per cent funding for eligible capital projects in exchange for reducing residential development charges over a three-year period.
Township staff have identified several projects that could be included in the application, including upgrades to water capacity, the South Fergus Sewage Pumping Station, the expansion of the Fergus Wastewater Treatment Plant, a new fire hall, and a multi-use recreation facility.
Under the Township’s proposed plan, residential development charges would be reduced by an estimated 36 per cent, meeting provincial program requirements while helping accommodate future housing development.
Staff note the funding program is highly competitive and approval is not guaranteed.
The Township would also remain responsible for costs not covered under the program, including design and engineering work, legal expenses, staff time, and any project cost overruns.
