ONTARIO – With Canada Day approaching, the Ontario Provincial Police are stepping up enforcement across the province, targeting the high-risk driving behaviours that continue to contribute to serious and fatal collisions.
Police say officers will be out in greater numbers this weekend, throughout the Canada Day holiday period, and across the summer, focusing on dangerous driving behaviours while also ensuring motorists and recreational users are using the proper safety equipment.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the number of traffic fatalities is significantly higher than it was at this point last year. So far in 2026, 164 people have lost their lives in motor vehicle collisions across Ontario.
The OPP has also responded to nine fatal off-road vehicle crashes and four fatal marine incidents this year.
Schmidt says vulnerable road users continue to be at risk, with 14 motorcyclists and 14 pedestrians among those killed on Ontario roads so far this year.
Schmidt is also urging motorists to remain vigilant and share the road safely with cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and other drivers. He reminds everyone to stay aware of their surroundings, obey posted speed limits, never drive impaired, and eliminate distractions behind the wheel.
The OPP says a safe holiday weekend starts with responsible choices, both on the road and on the water.
