CENTRE WELLINGTON – Centre Wellington Council recognized the Fergus Whalers Hockey Club during Monday evening’s meeting, celebrating the team’s historic Schmalz Cup championship season.
Council honoured the Whalers following an outstanding 2025-26 campaign that saw the club capture the PJHL Pollock Division Championship, the North Conference Championship, and ultimately the Schmalz Cup on May 10.
The Whalers emerged as Ontario’s Junior C champions after defeating competition from 61 teams across the province. The team finished the playoffs with an impressive 20-3 record, showcasing exceptional skill, determination and teamwork throughout their championship run.
The Schmalz Cup victory marked the first provincial championship in franchise history, making the achievement a milestone for both the organization and the community.
Council also recognized the strong local foundation behind the team, noting the Whalers are built by the community and for the community, with local players, coaches, volunteers and supporters contributing to the club’s success.
The recognition celebrated not only the team’s accomplishments on the ice but also the pride and community spirit the Whalers inspired throughout their historic season.
