WELLINGTON COUNTY/WEST REGION – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) laid thousands of charges across West Region during its annual Canada Day traffic campaign, with speeding once again topping the list of offences.
The campaign ran from June 26 to July 5, focusing on enforcement and education around seatbelt use, helmets, personal flotation devices (PFDs), speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.
Across West Region’s 13 OPP detachments, officers conducted 5,097 traffic stops and laid a total of 4,372 charges.
Wellington County Results
Locally, members of the Wellington County OPP laid:
- 306 speeding charges
- 61 seatbelt charges
- 7 impaired driving charges
- 5 distracted driving charges
- 2 personal flotation device (PFD) charges
- 0 helmet charges
The local numbers show speeding was by far the most common offence during the campaign, accounting for the majority of enforcement action.
West Region Results
Across the West Region, officers laid:
- 1,828 speeding charges (up from 1,568 in 2025)
- 304 seatbelt charges (303 in 2025)
- 102 impaired driving charges (down from 120)
- 39 distracted driving charges (up from 31)
- 17 personal flotation device charges (down from 32)
- 2 helmet charges (up from none last year)
The OPP says campaigns like this are designed to remind motorists that safe driving habits and the proper use of safety equipment help reduce serious injuries and fatalities on Ontario roads and waterways.
