BELWOOD – On July 30, 2026, Centre Wellington held a Special Council to move a recommendation by Township staff to delegate the authority to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to enter a lease agreement with Canada Post regarding the office space on 8460 Wellington Road 19 in Belwood.
According to the recommendation the current postmaster is terminating the lease due to retirement, and is effective Oct. 1.
CAO Dan Wilson said this changing of the guard ensures a new lease can be agreed upon before the busy election season.
Canada Post said it has already begun the process of searching for a postmaster replacement
“Should the process take longer than the anticipated retirement date, Canada Post will make every attempt to keep the post office open with temporary staff, but it would not a long-term solution,” media relations staff said in an email statement on July 30.
Centre Wellington Councillor, Bronwynne Wilton, said she wants the Township to provide a helping hand , such as with property upkeep, to ensure a mail service remains in Belwood.
In their email statement Canada Post said a postmaster-provided post office is a regular practice with the corporation and “requires postmasters to provide the facility in communities where there are limited options for existing space to provide postal services.”
As of the July 30 meeting, CAO Wilson said Canada Post has not yet finalized a post office plan with Centre Wellington, but staff are looking forward to constructive conversation.
“We understand the importance of the postal services we provide to the Belwood community and rural regions across the country, and we take that very seriously,” Canada Post said in their email.
