Over the course of the August long weekend West Region OPP conducted a traffic campaign, resulting in 1815 charges stemming from 2107 traffic stops.
The campaign lasted from July 31 until Aug. 3, and covered most of the Ontario Peninsula, West of the Greater Toronto Area.
Over the long weekend Wellington County drivers saw over 100 charges including 90 speeding offences, 10 seatbelt charges, one distracted driving and two impaired driving charges.
In a press release acting traffic inspector, Tara Bolstad, said cracking down on speeding is a major goal of the OPP.
“14 people have died in speed-related collisions in West Region so far this year; speeding remains a leading contributor in crashes, fatalities and injuries across Ontario,” Bolstad said.
The press release also said the campaign focused on negative driving behaviours contributing to traffic collision deaths, injuries and property damage on Ontario roads.
Across the greater region speeding was the most numerous charge with 856 offences; Essex County saw the most for a specific region with 183 speeding charges.
Wellington County had the second-most amount of speeders in the West Region this past weekend.
