UPDATE (2:14 p.m.): Fergus, Belwood, Hillsburgh, Erin, Forks of the Credit Provincial Park and Caledon Mountain are under a yellow thunderstorm watch with heavy rain and possible hail.
WELLINGTON COUNTY: Environment Canada has issued an orange watch for a severe thunderstorm in the areas of Guelph, Erin and Southern Wellington County.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” the report said.
Possible hazards could include damaging winds with gusts exceeding 110 kph, up to ping-pong ball sized hail, “torrential downpours” with local amounts possibly exceeding 50 mm and a risk of a tornado.
Environment Canada said the strength of the storm remains uncertain due to current cloud cover stabilizing conditions, for now.
“Latest trends in observational data and models still indicate that sufficient instability should build leading to a robust severe weather threat,” they said.
They also say today’s thunderstorm threat could become favourable for tornado formation.
“Utility outages are possible. Significant damage to property, buildings and trees is possible. There is a risk of serious injury.”
