FERGUS – The Terry Fox Run is returning to Centre Wellington this month, giving residents another opportunity to support cancer research while taking part in a local community event.
The annual fundraiser takes place Sunday, September 20, marking 46 years since Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope across Canada.
The local event is being organized by Fergus residents Hal Armstrong and Lawrence Levesque, who are excited to bring the run back to Centre Wellington.
“The schools traditionally have Terry Fox runs which is fantastic but for the rest of the community we felt it was time to bring the event back so people of all ages can participate,” said Armstrong.
Participants will follow the traditional route along the Elora Cataract Trailway, starting at Forfar Park on Gartshore Street and heading toward the Shand Dam before returning to the park.
The full route is 10 kilometres, but organizers say participants can choose how far they want to go.
“You can choose to go as far as you want to. It really doesn’t matter as long as you’re out participating,” said Levesque. “It is not a race! The event goes rain or shine and remember to bring your water bottle. Refill stations will be available along the route.”
The event will run from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., with participants able to arrive and take part at any point during that time. People can walk, run or ride their bikes.
“We’re looking forward to having a great turnout and growing the event,” said Armstrong.
Registration is required before participating. It begins at 9:30 a.m. at Forfar Park, while online registration is also available.
This year’s Terry Fox Foundation motto is “FINISH IT,” continuing Terry Fox’s vision of raising money for cancer research and ultimately ending cancer.
