GUELPH – Guelph Police have said no serious injuries occurred at Guelph’s raucous homecoming this past weekend.
A press release said, “the gathering was significantly larger than in recent years and generated several public-safety concerns.”
Police said they responded to multiple objects being thrown, people climbing buildings and “other structures,” as well as vandalism and shoplifting reports at nearby businesses.
The party’s main gathering was concentrated on Chancellors Way, close to the intersection of Stone Road and Edinburgh Road South.
Despite no serious injuries being reported at this time, emergency services treated cuts, lacerations and “intoxication-related medical calls.”
Guelph Police say due to an escalated risk for public safety, police deployed the Guelph Police Service Tactics and Rescue Unit.
“Officers laid several criminal and provincial offence charges as a result of the gathering, including charges for causing a disturbance and numerous alcohol-related offences,” the press release said, “investigators continue to review reported incidents, video and other evidence, and additional charges may be forthcoming.”
Police said party (response) prep began in advance with partnering services such as the University of Guelph, the City of Guelph and Bylaw staff, the Guelph Fire Department, Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Service, Guelph General Hospital and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
