WELLINGTON COUNTY – Wellington County OPP laid almost 30 speeding charges during a proactive traffic enforcement initiative over the weekend.
Police say the initiative ran from Friday, September 25th through Monday, September 28th, with officers focusing on speed enforcement throughout Wellington County.
As a result, almost 30 charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act for speeding.
In a release, police remind motorists that “speeding remains one of the leading contributing factors in fatal collisions on Ontario roads,” reducing a driver’s ability to react and increasing the severity of crashes.
Drivers are being reminded to slow down, obey posted speed limits and help keep roads safe for everyone.
With fall now underway, the Wellington County OPP is also warning motorists about changing road conditions, including frost, black ice and slippery surfaces that can develop with little warning.
Police are encouraging drivers to check their winter tires and vehicle maintenance, allow extra travel time, increase following distances and brake early and smoothly when road conditions are poor.
OPP says bridges, overpasses and shaded areas can freeze first and may appear wet while actually being icy.
The OPP is also reminding motorists to be mindful of other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and school buses.
Police say “road safety is a shared responsibility,” and encourage motorists to start preparing for winter weather before it arrives.
