WELLINGTON COUNTY – With Halloween just around the corner, Wellington County OPP are sharing some safety reminders to help keep trick-or-treaters, motorists and partygoers safe this weekend.
Police are reminding parents and children to take a few extra precautions before heading out on Halloween night.
Some of the key tips include:
-
Be visible: Carry a flashlight, wear reflective clothing or use glow sticks to help motorists see you.
-
Stay with an adult: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult and reminded never to enter a stranger’s home or garage.
-
Plan ahead: Older children should have a planned route, with parents or guardians knowing where they are going and when they expect to be home.
-
Use caution on the roads: Walk on sidewalks whenever possible. If there isn’t one, walk facing traffic. Cross at safe locations and avoid walking between parked cars.
-
Check Halloween treats: Parents should inspect candy and throw away anything that’s unwrapped or homemade and comes from strangers.
OPP are also reminding drivers to slow down and watch for children, particularly in residential neighbourhoods.
Police say children can get caught up in the excitement of Halloween and may unexpectedly enter the roadway. Drivers should take extra care around intersections and when entering or leaving driveways.
And for adults heading to Halloween parties, police say to plan ahead and arrange a safe, sober ride home. Never drive impaired.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity or a crime in progress is asked to contact police.
