Recommendations and budget for the upkeep and maintenance of gravel roads were discussed at council’s meeting earlier this week.
Mayor Kelly Linton tells The Grand at 101, the Centre Wellington Strategic Plan for 2022 includes increasing rural road service levels and rehabilitation of gravel roads that have been prioritized in the Road Needs Study and Asset Management Plan.
Linton says council is trying to develop a long term plan for rural roads in the area.
He says this council has made gravel roads a priority by increasing spending on upkeep and upgrades fromĀ $214,000 to $800,000 per year.
Among the recommendations in a gravel road condition assessment report, include increasing that funding even further to $2 million per year over a 10-year period but Linton says they have to carefully look at where spending should be targeted.
The 2022 capital budget does have a starting point in terms of funding for gravel road maintenance and pavement of of some of those roadways.
