Increased sex trafficking levels in Centre Wellington and Wellington County were highlighted during an information night presented by Elora House.
Elora House is a shelter and support system solely for victims of sex trafficking, making it a first of it’s kind in the area.
The event included speakers from Victim Services Wellington County, Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington, and Wellington County OPP.
Constable and Youth Resiliency Officer Beth Hickey says traffickers target their victims through social media and gaming platforms within Wellington County.
According to Elizabeth Kent, Executive Director of Victim Services Wellington County, sex trafficking can happen to anyone but they do see a lot of cases in those who are vulnerable.
Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington says several years ago they did not receive tips regarding these types of crimes but now they are seeing a growing number of calls regarding sex trafficking in the area.
