The union representing Canada Post workers appeared before Centre Wellington council to ask for support for an expansion of services that it says will not only help provide solutions to climate change, but also address the lack of proper rural internet access, rural banking services and more.
Derek Richmond, a representative for Canadian Union of Postal Workers, spoke about proposed service expansions throughout the province.
Richmond says the union believes the post office can be a hub for a wide variety of services that can be hard for rural residents to access, and they are currently presenting their proposals and asking for support through various councils in rural Ontario.
When asked about funding, Richmond said Canada Post is self-sufficient and funding comes from the company itself and not the federal government.
Richmond says each community hub model could look different depending on the services that a specific community would need.
Among the services they are looking to include in a community hub model is a senior’s check-in program, electric vehicle charging stations, banking services, internet access, and also the use of electric vehicles to deliver mail.
Council received the delegation for information however a decision on council support was not made.
