A natural treatment for the termite situation plaguing hundreds of homes in Centre Wellington has been agreed upon by township council.
During this week’s council meeting, council approved township staff’s recommendation to use a nematodes treatment.
The treatment uses microscopic roundworms that are added to water and poured into the opening of termite nests.
The termites become infected and eventually die off.
According to a staff report, the estimated cost is approximately $80,000 per year.
Brett Salmon, Managing Director of Planning and Development, says other municipalities have had success with this treatment option.
There are a total of 259 properties in “red zones”, and a further 219 properties in the “blue zones” in the area.
The red zones represent detected or inferred termite activity, and the blue zones are a buffer perimeter.
Salmon says staff will also prepare a request-for-proposal for vendors willing to provide this kind of treatment.
Salmon says they will be asking the chosen vendor to provide complete termite information and educational services for residents.
He says the vendor would also arrange for spring and fall yard wood waste bin distribution and pick-up.
