The man behind Drayton Entertainment has joined some exclusive company.
Alex Mustakas, the founding and current Artistic Director of Drayton has been given the Meritorious Service Medal.
The medal was presented earlier today at Rideau Hall in Ottawa by Governor General Mary Simon.
Created by Queen Elizabeth, the medal honours Canadians or “exceptional deeds which bring honour to our country”
Mustakas is being recognize for lifetime commitment to making the performing arts accessible and affordable.
And the ceremony comes just as Drayton launches it’s new season, the first full season post pandemic with all seven of it’s theatres opening.
Mustakas began his work in the theatre area with a plan for the almost abandoned opera house in Drayton. The initiative has since grown to more than 800 performances a year across the province, with attendance reaching a quarter million people. The economic impact of all that is estimated at 80 million dollars.
In receiving the medal Mustakas joins other well known Canadians, including astronaut Chris Hadfield, and Olympian Clara Hughes.
