NEWS RELEASE WELLINGTON COUNTY OPP
(COUNTY OF WELLINGTON, ON) – Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to consolidate and streamline our notable traffic offences and publish a single weekly release.
On October 21, 2022, at approximately 11:00 a.m., an officer with the Wellington County OPP was with a broken-down vehicle and a tow operator on Highway 6, in Guelph/Eramosa Township. Both the cruiser and tow-truck had the emergency lights fully activated when a white sedan passed them doing approximately 28 km/hr over the posted speed limit. The driver, a 36-year-old from Hillsburgh, was charged with Fail to Slow Down and Proceed with Caution for Emergency Vehicle or Tow Truck contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
On October 21, 2022 at approximately 11:30 p.m. an officer with the Wellington County OPP was conducting patrols on Highway 6, Guelph/Eramosa Township when he observed a black sedan being operated at approximately 178 km/hr in a posted 80 km/hr zone. As a result of the investigation, a 20-year-old from Guelph has been charged with Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed and Drive Motor Vehicle – No Permit contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The defendant is scheduled to appear before the provincial offences court at a later date.
On October 22, 2022 an officer with the Wellington County OPP observed a pickup truck pulling a trailer with a lighting system that was not fully operational under the Highway Traffic Act. As a result of the investigation a 21-year-old from Guelph has been charged with 10 Highway Traffic Act Charges including Unsafe Vehicle, Defective Brakes, No Directional Signals, and Improper Brakes on Trailer. The defendant is scheduled to appear before the provincial offences court at a later date.
On October 22, 2022 at approximately 10:00 p.m. an officer with the Wellington County OPP was patrolling Wellington Road 109 in Minto Township and observed a black Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) being operated in an erratic manner. The officer stopped the SUV, and as a result of the investigation, a 26 year-old of Palmerston has been charged with Operation while Impaired, Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand, Dangerous Operation, and Resist Peace Officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada as well as Operate a Motor Vehicle without Insurance and Drive Motor Vehicle – Fail to Display Two Plates. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice – Guelph at a later date.
On October 22, 2022 at approximately 11:00 p.m., an officer with the Wellington County OPP was conducting stationary radar at Highway 6 and Eighth Line and observed a sedan traveling 137 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone. As a result of the investigation a 29-year-old of Shelburne has been charged with Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed under the Highway Traffic Act and with Drive Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available under the Cannabis Control Act. The defendant is scheduled to appear before the provincial offences court in Guelph at a later date.
On October 24, 2022, the Wellington County OPP responded to a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles on Brock Road South at approximately 3:00 a.m. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. As a result of the investigation, a 38-year-old of Hamilton has been charged with Operation while Impaired and Operation while Impaired – 80 Plus (blood alcohol concentration). The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice – Guelph, at a later date.
On October 26, 2022, the Wellington County OPP responded to a report of a grey sedan that had struck a transport truck and gone into a ditch on the Hanlon Parkway. As a result of the investigation, a 27 year-old of Cambridge has been charged with Operation while Impaired and Operation while Impaired – 80 Plus (blood alcohol concentration). The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice – Guelph, at a later date.
On October 26, 2022, the Wellington County responded to a report of a collision involving a pickup truck and a pedestrian on Highway 6, in Arthur. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with minor injures. As a result of the investigation, a 54-year-old of Arthur was charged with Fail to Yield to Pedestrian, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
A Brampton company and a commercial vehicle driver are facing multiple charges following an investigation by the Wellington County OPP, with the assistance of the Guelph Police Service. On August 18, 2022, the Wellington County OPP responded to a report of a commercial vehicle that had lost two of its’ wheels on Wellington County Road 35. The driver was able to continue on, but a Good Samaritan assisted officers with locating the vehicle. A CVSA certified inspector with the Wellington County OPP and a CVSA certified inspector with Guelph Police were able to inspect the commercial motor vehicle. As a result of the initial inspection and further investigation, a 39-year-old of Brampton has been charged with Dangerous Operation, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada as well as with 24 additional Highway Traffic Act charges. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice, Guelph, at a later date. The owner of the commercial motor vehicle, a business out of Brampton is also facing 23 Highway Traffic Act charges. The defendant is scheduled to appear before the provincial offences court at a later date.
Anyone charged with Impaired Operation – 80 Plus (mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood) or Failing to Comply with Demand receives a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) and a 7-day Vehicle Impoundment as per statute.
Anyone charged with Racing a Motor Vehicle receives a 14-day impoundment and a 30-day driver’s licence suspension as per statute.
