A local non-profit organization covering Centre Wellington and Wellington North says they are being inundated with cats and kittens right now.
The group, known as Arthur Animal Rescue Co-operative (AARC), has taken in over 1200 tabbies since their inception in 2015, but Michelle Dixon, fundraising coordinator, says this year is presenting unique challenges.
She says this time around, what is known as kitten season, has offered so many new cats and kittens that AARC has expanded their care to new areas across Wellington County.
Dixon stated that 13 mama cats have delivered 54 kittens – leading to members of her group taking kittens into their own homes.
She also stated that the average stay of a kitten is about four weeks, and that won’t change with increased volume. The key, she says, is donations, every one of which helps.
Dixon says the spike in felines speaks to important issue of spaying and neutering the cats. She hopes more foster homes become available to help find these cats their “forever homes.”
