New federal regulations on methane gas emissions may impact Wellington County.
The Riverstown landfill site might soon have to conduct assessments on methane levels, according to Dos Soligo, County Manager of Solid Waste Services.
At the federal level, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) recently proposed methane regulations which will supersede any provincial methane regulations.
Soligo said at a Tuesday committee meeting, there is a threshold for methane levels that could force action by the County.
Soligo also mentioned a drone fly-over could be necessary to track levels.
He says this procedure won’t take place until 2025, as the County’s joint bid for funding with the City of Guelph was unsuccessful.
He adds excess methane would need to be repurposed or destroyed.
Wellington County had received an exemption from the current provincial requirement to manage methane generated from the Riverstown landfill site, because the landfill design has two distinct waste mounds, the site has a low filling rate, and much of the Phase I waste has been in place for many years putting it past the peak of methane generation.
