Two local lacrosse players are making waves not only within Centre Wellington, but on an international stage as well.
Blake Willard and Riley Woods were a part of Ontario’s Evolve Elite Lacrosse at the Adrenaline Platinum Cup.
The two were key cogs in an undefeated run by the squad en-route to capturing the championship cup in Delaware.
Woods, who lives between Fergus and Arthur, scored a crucial goal amidst a comeback in the final game. He says the rally from a multiple-goal deficit to grab glory was a peak moment of the tournament for him.
The 15-year-old, and U-17 Centre Wellington Riverhawk, explains the success stems from knowing your role both as an individual, and a part of a team.
Willard, also 15 and a Fergus resident, adds he loves the community lacrosse creates.
The fellow-Riverhawk says the team was functioning as a well-oiled machine throughout the tournament.
Blake Willard’s father Chris, who has been a part of the lacrosse community for a lengthy period, explains he loves the team-oriented aspect of lacrosse, and that no one player can win a game or a tournament.
He says lacrosse doesn’t get much television or media coverage and was glad to see local kids making their mark outside the country.
Woods adds this was the first tournament for this team together, and there were a lot of new faces, so going undefeated was quite an accomplishment.
Willard said it was a great experience and couldn’t pinpoint a favourite moment because the whole thing was so special.
The tournament was a jam-packed schedule of hotly contested action with six games played within 24 hours.
