CENTRE WELLINGTON – Centre Wellington Council is giving some hope to those trying to save Middlebrook bridge.
The structure that borders Centre Wellington and Woolwich Township has been barricaded off to pedestrian and cyclist travel since the spring of 2021.
The group Save Middlebrook Bridge has been trying to have the bridge rehabilitated, saying it is a beacon of connectivity in the area.
During a council meeting held yesterday, Councillor Lisa MacDonald proposed a new motion that would direct staff to consult with the Township of Woolwich and the Save Middlebrook Bridge Community Group to investigate new options.
In February of 2022, council voted 4-2 to remove the bridge without replacement.
The new motion was passed.
Councillor MacDonald says it allows council to investigate possible funding options while letting Woolwich Township know, they are open to working together and look at alternate fates for the structure.
According to the group Save Middlebrook Bridge, the cost to remove the bridge without replacement would be $720,000 dollars and be shared by the two communities it connects, Centre Wellington ad Woolwich Township.
The group says the cost to rehabilitate bridge for pedestrian and cyclist use would be around $1.1 million.
