WELLINGTON NORTH – Following a delegation in March during which council in Wellington North received a request for a new rainbow crosswalk, the idea was met with financial, and safety concerns this week.
Rosie Krul made the ask in order to increase representation for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Wellington North council however, were presented with what they considered to be higher traffic volume intersections in the new traffic crossings coming to Mount Forest.
These were not areas they felt comfortable putting a rainbow crosswalk, referencing other cities where lower-density areas were chosen.
Beyond that, councillor Steve McCabe raised concerns about upkeep.
While financial implications were brought up, councillor Penny Renken thought the concept itself wasn’t necessary.
The ideas of flags and banners were more appealing to council, who will come back to the topic at a later meeting.
They decided not to proceed with a crosswalk until the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Non-Standard Pavement Markings for Crosswalks Study has been completed.
