CENTRE WELLINGTON – A new 40km/h neighbourhood pilot program is being proposed for Centre Wellington.
According to a report to be presented at Monday’s committee of the whole meeting, township staff are proposing a pilot program that would see 40km/h speed limits implemented in one urban neighbourhood in Centre Wellington.
The report says speeding and traffic-related accidents within neighborhoods have been a persistent concern for the Township.
“Lowering the speed limit within neighborhoods has been recognized as an effective measure to enhance road safety and reduce the severity of traffic collisions,” the report said.
Pending Township Council’s endorsement of the pilot study, staff will select a neighborhood for the pilot program in late 2023, and begin public education and stakeholder engagement/consultation activities in early winter 2024, with the goal of fully implementing the program in the spring of 2024.
Staff say they have also been in contact with the Wellington County OPP about the proposed program.
“Through these discussions, the OPP have communicated that they are supportive of the pilot program, and they emphasized the importance of educating the public about the program.”
The report says the OPP also emphasized the importance of installing sufficient 40 km/hr speed signage in the pilot study area to assist with upholding speeding ticket challenges.
The estimated cost to implement the pilot study is $20,000, and staff say the funds will be used from an existing capital budget.
The report can be found here, and will be presented at Monday’s committee of the whole meeting.
