CENTRE WELLINGTON – More convenient parking in downtown Fergus was flagged as an issue by consultant RJ Burnside & Associates.
The report says Queen Street’s lot, Menzies Lane lot, and St. Patrick Lot are quite full while other parking areas have availability. The document goes on to mention issues in the downtown core on St. Andrews Street between Tower Street and St. David Street in Fergus.
As for Elora, drivers are assumed to feel pressure finding parking during the 12 PM – 5 PM period on weekends.
The report states parking is rarely available close to the desired destination between 12PM – 3 PM.
Parking was identified as a “critical” need for Elora.
Parking supply, long-term parking needs and accommodation were areas the township was encouraged to improve upon within the study.
Namely, additional parking in one of several forms was a theme in the report for both the downtowns of Fergus and Elora.
“There is a need to provide more parking in both downtowns. There are a few methods to provide additional parking which include building more supply through a surface lot or parking structure or securing shared parking agreements with other buildings such as schools, community centres, and churches,” the report states.
“Based on existing parking demand, Elora is in critical need of additional parking whereas Fergus requires more parking to provide more convenient access adjacent to destinations in the downtown such as pharmacies, retail, and services,” the document went on to break down.
The report will be received for information.
A final report is expected back in front of council in January of 2024.
