CENTRE WELLINGTON – A recently released parking strategy report from consultant RJ Burnside and Associates led to questions and concerns surrounding parking availability in Fergus and Elora.
Council in Centre Wellington voiced the need for more parking in the evenings, and the possibility of a parking structure in both Fergus and Elora.
Councillor Barb Evoy pointed out the benefits extra parking in the evenings could bring to the downtown cores.
Evoy said she would like to see more data collected surrounding evenings in both Fergus and Elora.
Several highlights of the report included a critical need for parking in Elora and a requirement for more convenient parking in the downtown core of Fergus.
Evoy stressed the importance of recognizing potential expansions in Fergus when thinking about parking strategy.
Evoy went on to say that in conversations with community members her sense is people would willingly pay for more accessible parking.
She was sure to mention the need for parking in Elora is there as well, and they could also benefit from some sort of a parking structure.
Evoy wasn’t the only councillor with suggestions as councillor Bronwynne Wilton tabled the idea of repurposing certain Fergus lots to parkades.
A final version of the document with recommendations to council will come to staff early in the new year.
