FERGUS – Centre Wellington council has approved staff to execute an agreement ahead of the reconstruction of St. David Street North in Fergus next year.
A report presented at Monday’s council meeting by Adam Gilmore, manager of engineering, recommended the township enter an agreement with Suncor Energy to define responsibilities regarding excavation and disposal of contaminated soil.
Gilmore said as part of Phase 1 of the St. David Street reconstruction project, soil adjacent to 390 St. David Street North and 115 St. George Street East will be excavated to replace buried infrastructure.
He said the properties are known to have soil and groundwater contamination from past fuel storage and dispensing activities.
Meanwhile, Councillor Bronwynne Wilton wondered if there was any headway on rehabilitating the properties, suggesting some type of passive park, noting it would be beside the new St. George pedestrian cross walk.
Gilmore said they have had discussions with Suncor, indicating to staff that they are currently in a record of site condition process.
Council unanimously approved the township to enter into the agreement with Suncor.
