FERGUS – Based on a true, 100-year-old story, Radium Girls is set to premiere at Fergus Grand Theatre February 9th.
Put on by the Elora Community Theatre Group, director Catherine Johnston dubbed the play an important social statement.
Johnston says cast have put in their hours to prepare for this production.
The play tells the tale of a saga that started during World War 1 when radium was discovered.
In 1926, radium was a miracle cure and luminous watches the latest rage, the play’s event information page states- – until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease.
Organizers urge you to come meet the radium girls, premiering in a matter of days. Johnston says to fully capture the angst present in the story, visual elements are heavily utilized.
Johnston says the production, which tells the story of Grace Fryer, a 1920’s dial painter, is unlike anything Elora Community Theatre has done before.
She went on to say this unique production has been a local effort organizers are excited to put on for Centre Wellington.
Johnston says the local involvement is fitting, given the artisic flare to both Fergus and Elora.
The show kicks off at the Fergus Grand Theatre, February 9th to 11th, and again February 16th to 18th.
