WELLINGTON COUNTY – This February, the Upper Grand District School Board is celebrating Black Heritage, Black Brilliance and Black Joy.
Several speakers, many presentations and resources will be shared with schools throughout the remainder of the month.
Sherwyn Solomon, UGDSB’s Principal of Equity and Inclusion, says celebrating black joy and brilliance needs to be a board-wide effort, year-round.
Alicia Ralph, the board’s Human Rights, Equity and Accessibility Commissioner, agreed looking beyond February is crucial.
Solomon says staff across the board continue to engage in deep, meaningful conversations, to make sure they provide a system that supports all.
Ralph went on to say the verbiage chosen in celebrating this year’s Black Heritage Month was no accident.
Whether the activity occurs in February, March, or any other month, Solomon says celebrating black heritage is crucial.
Prominent speakers will include Tracy Cain, who will share with students the lived experiences of black Canadians.
